Barnyard Sensory Gym opens in Floyd County
with inclusive indoor play space
The Barnyard Sensory Gym, a project of Strengthening Our System (SOS) Inc, opened its doors to children ages 2-14 last week. Featuring a climbing wall, foam pit, swings, and much more, The Barnyard is designed to help children grow and get their wiggles out while also building community.
The Barnyard Sensory Gym opened May 6, 2026. This is a project of Strengthening Our System Inc.
Owned by Parris Stafford, SOS has been serving both adults and children with developmental disabilities for more than 20 years and is excited to add a sensory gym to its offerings. Executive Director Stephanie Bakely said that after years of research and feedback from local families, she developed the business plan to bring The Barnyard to life and pitched it to Stafford.
“One of the most common pieces of feedback from families is that there are not enough indoor recreational opportunities open to all abilities or that further travel is required to engage in play opportunities,” Bakely said. “We wanted to provide a local space offering sensory exploration for all abilities. We all have sensory needs. We wanted it to be a place where siblings and friends can engage, learn from one another, and build community.”
Bakely noted that Julie Ellis was recently hired as The Barnyard’s manager, and other attendants, or “farm hands,” can be identified by their neon vests, so there are plenty of eyes to help keep track of rambunctious little ones.
Bakely explained that sensory play supports development in a variety of ways, including motor skills, creative thinking, coordination, and body awareness. “For many, it can also be an outlet to soothe or release energy that feels trapped within the body,” she said.
While the main sensory gym area is designed for children ages five to 14, Bakely said there is also a Toddler Zone for ages two to four, and there’s a space that community members or organizations can rent for training, exercise classes, celebrations, and more.
Play sessions at The Barnyard are set for one or two-hour intervals. They start on the hour, and players are asked to arrive 10-15 minutes early to finalize logistics and equip grippy socks. Adult supervision is required while exploring the gym.
The Barnyard Sensory Gym, located at 177 Gracie Lane NW, is open from 11 a.m. until 6 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday; and from 1-6 p.m. on Sunday. Learn more and make reservations online (walk-ins also welcome) at www.sosbarnyard.com or by calling (540) 267-2276 (BARN).
